Impotent Now

I wrote this poem after a coincidental commonality emerged within the stories of people around me. It features the process of recognition and escape, but it does not highlight the contribution of the ‘victim’ to their own story. That at times, is also part of the story to be told when suffering from the actions of others.

I called it “impotent now” because these figures in people’s lives are so powerful in the way they influence and control, the escape usually involves making them ineffective rather than defeating or overpowering them. They become impotent. That’s the power we all have - to no longer participate.

Impotent now

He lies and tries and cries and denies and vies. He hurts and blurts and wrecks and projects. He pains and gains takes and fakes
pretends and offends rages and wages.
While feigning and straining
he snoozes and loses not watching
nor spotting his victim is plotting.
Making her escape from the terrible fate
of her captors’ affections relentless attentions -
his blindness!
It's thrilling that he thinks he's winning
but with his every new victory she finds new discovery of substantiating corroborating historical evidence of fact that
she. has. been.
stabbed. in. the. back.
Betrayed by compassion love and affection conscience-less actions to supply satisfaction
to one who played meek and sweet with deceit
and now exposed
he is deposed
removed from influence
significance or relevance.
A permanent tantrum.
Looking for sanction.

she has no more fear
the Child must be ignored
revealed forevermore
as one who is ill?
Disorder?
Out of order!
Impotent now
A barrier to freedom
no more
